In the second installment in the Marvel Women Gender Issues series, we’ll be taking a look at Captain Marvel. She doesn’t even stop to coo at babies or cats. Much ink has been spilled, and precious airtime wasted, on how much Hillary Clinton should or shouldn’t smile. Rewriting comic book history has not been limited to a change in gender. The comic book world has continuously focused on strong male characters. It’s also being co-directed by Anna Boden. Captain Marvel is set to release in theatres and showcases steps towards equal gender representation in the film industry. She was the hero we needed, especially when compassion began being in such short supply in the nation’s capitol. Perhaps the most significant departure in Captain Marvel from previous depictions of womanhood is that she draws her strength from her deep friendship with a woman and fellow fighter pilot, Maria Rambeau, instead of any romantic or sexual relationship—with a man or otherwise. Captain Marvel follows the adventures of Carol Danvers, former Ms. Marvel and ace pilot. Captain Marvel’s womanhood is centered in her refusal to tame herself, as the men in her life want her to, or buy into the mindset that her emotionality will be her doom, as her Kree male mentor insists. Wonder Woman’s excessive questions also made her appear confused; even though I know it’s because she comes from another world, her curiosity made her appear naive and clueless. We know that she is supposed to be strong, but we don’t actually see a strong muscular body—we see a skinny, relatively delicate one, especially in comparison to the other women in her homeland of Themiscyra. Controversial? However, after gaining the same powers as him, Danvers became more or less on par in terms of strength, official statistics aside. But as a superhero, Captain Marvel is just right. Wonder Woman proves that love and kindness can make us powerful, and in doing so she venerates the typical notions of womanhood. We see this dynamic play out in the sports world, where female athletes are expected to keep their tempers in check, be gracious and be “feminine” or “sexy” all at once. She’s beautiful, kind, gracious, innocent. Yes. This physical comparison is also displayed in Captain Marvel. If you are a Marvel fact-checker please send us a letter. Even though this is a great step for Hollywood, this character was already a female to begin with. These are the kinds of ideals and expectations that Wonder Woman, as a superhero, didn’t challenge. The character started out as Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel’s love interest and colleague. “People have to take into account when these characters were made. It was made in the 50s and 60s where it was a male-dominated industry and that industry isn’t the same now,” said Daniel Loria, architecture technology student. So why should it be a big deal if Iron Man was rebooted as Iron Woman, or Iron Human? “Captain Marvel” stars actress Brie Larson as strong-willed pilot Carol Danvers, who becomes the superhero Captain Marvel and is caught in a war between two alien worlds. But Captain Marvel’s strength challenges a stereotypical depiction of womanhood—and as women around the world continue to rise up, she’s the kind of hero we deserve. I don’t want to be dismissive of qualities like love and kindness that Wonder Woman embodies, especially in a world where those qualities are perceived as feminine and devalued because of it. Less catchy? Let me be clear. She won because of the weapon. Marvel was set up in 1939 and most of the characters that we have come to know were created in the 1950's and 60's, from Captain America in the 40’s to Spiderman, Hulk and Thor is the 60’s. Captain Marvel is set to release in theatres and showcases steps towards equal gender representation in the film industry.. Hillary Clinton should or shouldn’t smile. That a woman can “find herself” without needing heterosexual romantic love to guide her is something we don’t see enough of in movies across genres—and strangely, not even in Wonder Woman, where the superhero grew up on an isolated island populated only by women. Not a big surprise when one considers gender differences. But Captain Marvel, in many ways, directly addressed and subverted them. He tries to convince her to put down the stun gun and she simply shoots him to win. Do you have a sociopolitical story or experience to share? In the beginning, Yon-Rogg (a man) is sparring with Captain Marvel (a woman). Anna Boden, the director, is also waiting for the day when a female director doesn’t make headlines solely on the premise of their gender. While her suit is form-fitting, it’s not sexualized—we never see cleavage, legs, high heels or shots of her behind, as we often do with Black Widow. Gender differences are accentuated in sports. In one moment of defiance, she even declares to a male colleague that she has “nothing to prove” to him. I mentioned in my video review that some people were upset about the Captain Marvel movie. The Marvel Cinematic Universe cast Brie Larson as Carol Danvers (alias Captain Marvel) for the film. This is thanks to all the efforts of feminist activists including Kelly Sue DeConnick, who helped reshape Danvers from the usual overly sexualized female character many male comic book readers cling to, into the strong protagonist she is today. I know. We celebrate that God made us who we are. The Marvel Cinematic Universe cast Brie Larson as Carol Danvers (alias Captain Marvel) for the film. With women comprising only 33% of speaking roles on-screen, The Avengers failing the Bechdel Test proves the cavernous gender gap in film and how far we still need to go. This is the first time Marvel has done a female lead film, with the exception of the television series: Jessica Jones, featuring Krysten Ritter. Captain Marvel’s physical appearance is different from any other female superhero we’ve seen. Sharing God’s glory through sight, song, & story. Captain Marvel’s physical appearance is different from any other female superhero we’ve seen. There are a multitude of stereotypes in Marvel comics and have been for generations; African-Americans, Asians, Germans, Women, Gays—all have stereotypes that they follow or struggle with throughout Marvel comics. After the former Captain Marvel dies, Carol is called to take the title. Though Carol is flattered, low self-esteem and anxiety plague her decisions. As the first female-character-led film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this film was long overdue to provide female superhero fans a headlining hero that looks like them. DC Films beat Marvel Studios to the punch with Gal Gadot starring as Wonder Woman in 2018, however, this is not the point. Instead, her outfit feels practical for what she needs to do, as it appears to be an armor shielding her from enemy fire that also allows for her own ease of movement. But these kinds of actions should be considered if gender equality is to be taken seriously. I have two dogs (Labradors) - Samson and Charlie. Captain Marvel hardly ever smiles, which even became a point of criticism among some anti-feminist trolls after the first trailer was released. And it should surprise no one that they’re winning. That’s what makes her a formidable opponent. One example of a character that is subject to stereotypes is Betty Ross, originally seen in Captain America comics. Both Marvel and DC have scrapped entire storylines to simplify its new ones to avoid continuity errors. As a movie, Captain Marvel also has some flaws. (Their male counterparts don’t face such scrutiny or pressure.). She appears to be physically strong; her stance and her body exude strength and muscularity. We’re all familiar with the dismissive remarks about women being too emotional, at least for one week of the month, to be in the White House. “They’re addressing modern standards.”. These are the only two female superhero leads that we have ever seen in Marvel or DC films—and whether it’s incidental or not, they reveal much about how our culture thinks about power, femininity and womanhood. He realizes he can’t win because she has a weapon that can disable him. There’s nothing naïve about Captain Marvel—she’s a smart soldier who understands strategy and betrayal.
